Church of Alaró

Chapel of Saint Anthony
The chapel is dedicated to the two orders of St. Anthony: the Order of Viana and the Order of Padua. The Brotherhood of St. Anthony of Viana, also known as the Abbot, was the wealthiest in the village. This is evident in the chapel's magnificence, charac-terized by the ornate walls, abundant gold, and beautifully painted vaulted ceiling.
The lower sculpture represents St. Anthony Abbot. The upper one, St. Anthony of Padua.
The two lateral pictures of the lower section of the chapel are St. Lucia and St. Marcial. They were painted by Fausto Morell Bellet, owner of the Solleric estate in Alaró. They were painted in 1877, when the chapel was reformed to reposition the altarpiece.
The two lateral paintings at the top are associated with the Immaculate Conception, suggesting that during the 19th-century renovations, they were moved from the near-by chapel.
In the apse and in other parts of the church, the Greek letter Tau, a symbol of St. An-thony of Viana, is featured. The vault is embellished with floral motifs, four angels and a moulding with the figure of the hermit saint.
We propose a game. Go to the four lateral paintings, which represent the temptations the devil uses to make the saint sin. How many devils can you find? Be warned: some are camouflaged.
