Church of Alaró
01
Welcome
Welcome to Alaró’s church.
This is the second temple erected in this place. The first one was from the beginning of the 14th century, of Gothic style and much smaller. We will find some remains of the primitive building along the route.
In 1626, Rector Joan Coll urged the City Council to construct a new church to accommodate the growing population. The plans were designed by sculptor Jaume Blanquer. The church is primarily in the Baroque style, though it features some Gothic elements, such as ribbed vaults.
The old temple was constructed in an interesting manner. First, the original structure was preserved while the side walls were raised and the roof was built. Once this phase was completed, the previous construction was demolished, and the assembly of the chapels began.
You may have already seen the building from the outside. If not, you can take a look on your way out. Its floor plan is nearly rectangular, with the exception of the bell tower, where the Holy Sacrament chapel and the sacristy extend outward. The building is constructed from regular-sized limestone blocks, of which an estimated twenty thou-sand were used.
The most outstanding element of the façade is the main portal. It is the work of the Italian artist Antonio Soldati, finished in 1785.
