Chapel of the Souls in Purgatory
You are standing in front of the Chapel of the Souls in Purgatory. The altarpiece was created by Joan Antoni Oms, who worked on it between 1660 and 1667. Oms is re-garded as the most important Majorcan sculptor of the 17th century. The side col-umns feature two beautiful angels, inspired by the myth of Atlantis, which support the entire structure.
In the upper part, there is an allegory representing the Heart of Jesus along with two small figures that symbolize the souls in Purgatory.
The carving of Christ in the central chapel precedes the altarpiece. The painting de-picts the Virgin Mary and Mary Magdalene.
Below the angels of Atlantis, the inscription "expiorum elemosinis" indicates that the altarpiece was created with donations from the faithful.
