Church of Alaró

Main altar
You stand before an extraordinary altarpiece, one of the most spectacular in Majorca.
The main feature that makes this structure exceptional is that it is carved from stone, specifically five different colored stones: white, black, yellow, red, and hazelnut. The construction began in 1698 and was completed seventeen years later. According to oral tradition, the people of Alaró polished the stones at home, which led to difficulties during the fitting process.
The set has ten columns of five different shapes, colours and ornamentation.
The sculptures depict saints closely connected to the history of the village. In the lower section, on the left, we find St. Sebastian, who was invoked during the terrible plague that afflicted the town in 1652. In the centre is St. Bartholomew, the patron saint of the parish. On the right, we see St. Roch, who is also a protector against the plague and a co-patron saint of Alaró.
There are three sculptures in the upper section. On the left is St. Vincent of Paul. In the centre is the finest carving of the temple, the Virgin of Hope, who is the patron saint of the town. On the right is the Blessed Ramon Llull, one of the most enlightened figures that Majorca has ever produced.
Among the paintings, we will highlight St. Bartholomew, located in the upper part of the altarpiece. St. Joachim is depicted with the Virgin on the left side of the second body, while St. Philip Neri is represented on the right.
There are many more details to consider. Before continuing your visit, take a moment to examine this monumental work. You will undoubtedly discover more elements that emphasize the significance of this impressive altarpiece.
